Younan Xia was born in Jingjiang, Jiangsu, China. Dr. Xia received his Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry from Harvard University (with Professor George M. Whitesides) in 1996, his M.S. degree in inorganic chemistry from University of Pennsylvania (with the late Professor Alan G. MacDiarmid) in 1993, and his B.S. degree in chemical physics from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 1987.

Denna Cumming joined BME in November, 2011 as Business Administrator for Research for managing the business activities of Dr. Younan Xia and his research team. Denna holds a B.S. in Computer Information Systems from DeVry University. She has been an employee of the Georgia Institute of Technology since 2004. Prior to coming to Georgia Tech Denna was a Communications Operator for the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command.

Jie Zeng is the Research Assistant Professor. Dr. Zeng received a BS in Applied Chemistry and a PhD in Condensed Matter Physics with Professor Jianguo Hui from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 2002 and 2008, respectively. Dr. Zeng joined the Xia group in 2008 and his research focused on the design and synthesis of novel nanostructures for applications in catalysis and biomedical applications.

Suk Ho Bhang was born in Seoul, South Korea. He received his Ph.D. from school of chemical and biological engineering at Seoul National University in 2008. His doctoral research was focused on the tissue engineering (angiogenesis, nerve regeneration, chondrogenesis, and bone regeneration using adult stem cells). In February of 2011, he joined the Xia group as a postdoctoral fellow, working on tissue engineering.

Wenshuai Chen was born in Liaoning province, China. He received his B.S. degree in wood science and engineering from Northeast Forestry University in 2008. Currently, he is pursuing his Ph.D. degree with Prof. Yixing Liu and Associate Prof. Haipeng Yu in department of wood science and technology at Northeast Forestry University. In September 2011, he joined the Xia group as a visiting student. His research interests include isolation of nanocrystals from lignocellulose materials and exploration of their applications.

Naixu Li was born and grew up in Tangshan, Hebei, China. He received his B.S. degree in chemical engineering and technology from Southeast University in 2007. He is now pursuing his Ph.D. degree with Prof. Yueming Sun in school of chemistry and chemical engineering at Southeast University. He joined the Xia group as a visiting student in September 2011. His research interests include the synthesis and application of novel metal nanostructures.

Maochang Liu was born and grew up in Yangzhou, Jiangsu, China. He received his B.S. degree from the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Xi’an Jiaotong University in 2007. He is now pursuing his Ph.D. degree with Prof. Liejin Guo in State Key Laboratory of Multiphase Flow in Power Engineering at Xi’an Jiaotong University. In September 2011, Maochang joined the Xia group as a visiting student. His research interest focuses on synthesis of novel metal nanostructures and their applications.

Ping Lu was born in Jiangsu, China. He received his B.S. (2002) and M.S. (2005) both in chemistry from Donghua University and Ph.D. in agriculture and environmental chemistry from University of California Davis. His doctoral research was focused on the fabrication and application of micro- and nano-fibrous materials. Ping joined the Xia group as a postdoctoral fellow in September 2011, working on the production of nanostructured materials by electrospinning, with a focus on their biomedical and catalytic applications.

Wenying Liu was born in Jiangxi, China. She received her B.S. degree in biological engineering from School of Chemical Engineering and Technology of Tianjin University in 2009. As a second-year graduate student from EECE, she is pursuing her Ph.D. in the Xia group. Her research interests include the production of electrospun nanofibers and their applications in biomedicine, such as understanding cell-scaffold interaction as well as drug delivery.

Christine Moran grew up primarily on the East Coast and is most recently from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Rice University with a B.S. in bioengineering in 2009. She is now pursuing a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering in the Xia group. Her research interests center around the medical applications of metallic nanoparticles and their use in surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS).

Min Suk Shim was born in Seoul, South Korea. He received his Ph.D. degree in macromolecular science and engineering from Case Western Reserve University in 2011. His doctoral research was focused on the synthesis of stimuli-responsive polymers for gene delivery. He joined the Xia group as a postdoctoral fellow in March 2011. His research interests include the development of new nanomaterials and systems for biomedical applications such as cancer therapy.

Dehui Wan was born in Taipei, Taiwan. He received his Ph.D. degree in material science and engineering from National Taiwan University in 2010. His doctoral research was focused on the optical properties of metal nanoparticles and their applications for optoelectronic devices and biosensors. He joined the Xia group in October 2011. His research interests include development of gold-based nanomaterials for biomedical applications.

Yi Wang was born in Sichuan, China. He received his B.S. degree in chemistry from Southwest University in 2007. He is pursuing his Ph.D. degree with Prof. Cheng Zhi Huang in department of chemistry and chemical engineering at Southwest University. As a jointly supervised student, he joined the Xia group in September 2011. His research interests include synthesis of metal nanostructures and their applications in biomedicine and analytical chemistry.

Yucai Wang was born in Fujian, China. He received his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in polymer science and engineering from University of Science and Technology of China in 2005 and 2010, respectively. His doctoral research was focused on the controlled syntheses of polyphosphoesters and their bioapplications. He joined the Xia group in January 2011. His research interests include gold nanocages for theragnostics in cancer therapy.

Xiaohu Xia was born in Anhui province, China. He graduated from Xiamen University with a B.S. in biotechnology in 2006. He is now pursuing his Ph.D. degree with Prof. Qingge Li in department of biomedical science at Xiamen University. As a jointly supervised Ph. D. student, he joined the Xia group in October 2009. His research interests include nanomaterial synthesis, surfaced-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and its biological and medical applications.

Shuifen Xie was born in Xiamen, Fujian province, China. He received his B.S. degree in chemistry from Xiamen University in 2007. He is now pursuing his Ph.D. degree in nanomaterial chemistry at Xiamen University in China. As a jointly supervised student, he joined the Xia group in September of 2011. He is working on shape-controlled synthesis of metal nanostructures with a focus on their biomedical and catalytic applications.

Yu Zhang (Shrike) was born and grew up in Nanjing, China. He received his B.S. degree in Biomedical Engineering from Southeast University in 2008. He is now pursuing his Ph.D. degree in the Xia group, with research interests in the understanding of cell interactions with biomaterials, tissue engineering, cell encapsulation and drug delivery. His hobby is nature-watching especially birding.

Yiqun Zheng was born in Anhui, China. He received his B.S. degree in materials chemistry from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 2009. He has been working in the Xia group as a Ph. D candidate since January 2010. His research interests include the synthesis of novel metal nanostructures for applications in plasmonics, catalysis, and fuel cell technology.

Cun Zhu was born and grew up in Yangzhou, Jiangsu, China. He received his B.S. degree in applied chemistry from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 2006. He is now pursuing his Ph.D. degree with Prof. Zhong-Ze Gu in department of chemistry and chemical engineering at Southeast University. In October 2010, Cun joined the Xia group as a visiting student. His research interests include the synthesis and application of composite magnetic nanoparticles and novel metal nanostructures.
